Bridging Community Through Literacy

Updated: May 4, 2020

2nd Annual Beverly Cleary Birthday Community Celebration!!

Welcome to the second annual Beverly Cleary Celebration in Yamhill! Our theme this year is, Inspire Hope! We started this event last year as one to promote literacy and to engage in our small-town heritage. It was a great time last year and this year’s line-up was excellent! Alas, sometimes we have to rewrite a new ending or a beginning. We hope you will visit and participate with us virtually. Please check out the contests below and click on the author and illustrator interviews from the new book, Just Like Beverly, written by Vicki Conrad and illustrated by David Hohn. Book review here: https://www.amylamae.com/post/just-like-beverly-biography-beverly-cleary

We have many Beverly Cleary enthusiasts in Yamhill and we have a lot to offer in our town historically. Being the first stagecoach stop in the late 1800s from the coast to Portland, we have some interesting heritage to share. The Bunn house where Beverly first grew up was the first fine home in the Yamhill County area. It is now claimed as a historical house. Through our event we have arranged a nice little walking tour that shares some facts from her growing up years and some of Yamhill’s rich turn of the century history. Please come visit us when you get a chance for this great walking tour.

Our event this year was also going to have a live visit from authors and illustrators! The brand new picture book biography, Just Like Beverly, August 2019 Sasquatch Books, written by Vicki Conrad and illustrated by David Hohn were scheduled to visit Yamhill Elementary School and for the Saturday event on Main St. We have decided to bring them to you virtually and close up for a meet and greet to a real author/illustrator. Please see their full interviews. Find out what it is like to write a book or how this illustrator began a career in drawing. We hope to have them visit in the future sometime or we will invite them back next year!

***Event Poster Illustration is from our Yamhill resident Kara Weber!

Please get this book at Third Street Books or your next Indie or Amazon purchase.

FOR WRITERS, ILLUSTRATORS AND CREATIVES:

In creating our celebration of Beverly Cleary in Yamhill, we want to inspire authors, illustrators and creatives for children.

Meet Dr. Mira Reisberg who is sometimes called the Picture Book Whisperer or the Fairy Bookmother. She grew up with a passion for creativity when her working class mother gave her art suPPlies and said, “I can’t give you a beautiful world, but you can make one for yourself.” Mira has explored many creative art forms; fine arts, murals, digital arts, picture book illustration, writing, and teaching. She has lived in many places, which have influenced her creativity, but now lives happily in Portland.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t have the literary celebration in Yamhill. She would have been amazing in person. Luckily, we are able move forward with some virtual greetings. Please meet this fabulous and creative person who desires to help others navigate and hone their creative skills for children’s book markets and to help bring more joy and/or compassion into the world.
